HIV/AIDS projects in Africa

More than 70% of the worldwide total of HIV sufferers live in Africa.
In Africa millions of children have lost their parents to AIDS. Most people living with HIV and AIDS can’t afford treatment for everyday infections, let alone the drugs, which can help to stop the progress of the infection.

Family members – almost always women – who care for HIV positive people face huge stress in finding the time and funds to help them as well as the emotional distress of watching their loved ones suffer and die. There are now hundreds of thousands of households headed by children.
Comic Relief Australia supports projects which provide care to HIV positive people, their families and their friends. We support community workers who make sure that HIV positive people get care and support, drugs for everyday infections and counselling. We also help to make sure that children who have lost their parents through HIV and AIDS can go to school or receive vocational training.
We also support projects that help to reduce the risk of infection by informing people about the risks of unsafe sex with much of this work being with the most ‘at risk’ group, young people. We also support groups of HIV positive people to combat the negative attitudes and to lobby governments for access to health care and treatment.
